In a global economy, the ability to communicate in dual languages is a tremendous asset. In the past decade, foreign language instruction in elementary schools has increased by nearly 10 percent. Unit 4 offers language instruction at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

Foreign Language Learning Standards

The national standards for foreign language learning overlap each other in instruction and help make foreign language learning relevant and meaningful. The five standards are:

Communication - communicate in languages other than English via interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication.

Cultures - understand the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the cultures studied.

Connections - connect with other disciplines and acquire information recognizing distinct viewpoints.

Comparisons - develop insight into the nature of language and culture through comparisons.

Communities - participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
